With sex comes responsibility for your actions and decisions.
Using contraception during sexual activity is one of those decisions that you and your partner have to make.
Q: Why do I need contraception or birth control when I am sexually active?
A: When you are sexually active, there is a need to protect yourself from sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancy. If you haven’t finished school yet or are too young to start a family, then you are not prepared. At the end of the day, it is your decision. When you have doubts, talk to your partner or better yet seek help from an OB/GYNE or counselor.
Q: How do oral contraceptives work?
A: Oral contraceptives or the pill contain the sex hormones estrogen and progesterone. Some may contain estrogen or progesterone only. These sex hormones contained in the pills send signals to the brain which in turn tells the ovaries not to release an egg. When an egg is not released by your ovaries, pregnancy cannot take place.
